What does an option year mean in a defense contract?
A U.S. federal contract option gives the government a contractual choice to extend performance or buy additional work on specified terms. A potential option year is different from a year the government has exercised.
Reading a base-plus-options notice
One base year plus four one-year options gives a possible five-year period. At award, describe the base period and potential duration separately. If the agency later exercises the first option, record the new action and its value without counting the full five-year potential again.
What evidence confirms exercise?
Look for the contracting officer’s written notice or a published modification identifying the option. A forecast, an approaching anniversary or a contractor’s expectation does not by itself establish that the government exercised it.
